On Buddhism and “detaching”…
I believe there’s a certain amount of “attachment” that’s HEALTHY and a certain amount that’s UNHEALTHY.
Some people say it’s attachment that HOLDS PEOPLE in ignorance… An inability to “detach” from old worldviews and unhealthy beliefs.
I say it’s a lack of scientific thinking…an inability to think through things logically and critically. A lack of education is what holds people in unhealthy beliefs…
Logic and critical thinking which are LEARNED SKILLS are what taught me there was a certain amount of letting go that’s healthy and a certain amount that’s unhealthy.
How did you learn concepts like detachment? Read about it in a book? Friend? Video?
Did you nod your head and go “Hmm… This idea of detachment makes some sense. I’m going to test it out.”
Your EDUCATION… your ability to THINK CRITICALLY… Your ability to UTILIZE THE CODING IN YOUR HEAD in the form of LANGUAGE was what allowed you to try out these different teachings of “detaching”…
I like Buddha’s teachings… Many great lessons to be learned from Buddhism, just like many of the other great world religions, but I think education (formal education and self-education) is more important than detaching.
I think learning to “detach” from time to time IN A HEALTHY AND BALANCED WAY is something that a well educated person will learn about along the way on his or her journey…
I like to think of “detaching” as a way to ALLOW THE MIND TO BREATHE… That’s the benefit I get from detachment. After a long rigorous day of work, coaching, reading, thinking critically… It’s nice to unwind and just LET IT ALL GO…
There’s also a certain amount of “detaching” that I BRING WITH ME throughout my day. While I work hard and METABOLIZE MY EXPERIENCE, Buddhist concepts like “detachment” allow me to go through my day with more focus, relaxation, and efficiency.
I learn to STEAL little moments of relaxation during GAPS in the action… I even learn to relax THROUGH times of stress and intensity.
At the end of the day though… I think the world needs more EDUCATION… A solid education will teach someone about ALL of the great religions of the world. A solid education will teach someone to look at religions and spiritual teachings WITH A CRITICAL EYE… and EXTRACT the beneficial teachings and APPLY THEM IN A SENSIBLE WAY to their life.
There’s a reason why people are fighting to help EDUCATE people that live in impoverished areas of the world. They’re teaching them math, reading, writing, science, history… and I’m sure a good teacher will sprinkle in some “detaching” and Buddhism to help them along their way, but they’re not sitting in classrooms DRILLING them with “letting go” lessons and “detaching” lessons all day…
The world needs EDUCATION… With education comes love, letting go, and many other beautiful things.
